"MIFUKO products compliment VENLA's ethos of eco-friendliness and sustainability, with a Nordic twist."
MIFKUO's story is inspirational. It was founded in 2009 by two Finnish designers Minna Impio and Mari Matikainen who decided to combine modern design with traditional Kenyan handcraft and fair trade.
The idea was born amongst the colourful bustle of a market in Nairobi, Kenya. Mari was visiting her close friend Minna who lived in Kenya at the time. They were amazed by the craftsmanship of the artisans selling their goods at the markets. Shortly thereafter, in 2009, Minna and Mari founded MIFUKO with a clear goal: to combine Nordic design and traditional African handicrafts that directly benefit the people of rural Kenya.
In Kenya, climate change has led to recurring droughts making farming, which is traditionally the primary source of income and sustenance, an unreliable foundation for a stable livelihood. The income artisans earn from MIFUKO helps ensure families are fed and cared for when crops can no longer provide security.
To shed light on the stories of the people behind the products, each MIFUKO product carries the name of the artisan who made it.
The company is a member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), a prestigious global community of Fair Trade social enterprises.
MIFUKO shopping bags (priced at $155) are now available at VENLA stores in Balmain, Mosman and Bondi.
